Discovering Sardinia and Corsica
Day 1 We leave
Zurich mid-morning on the direct International Express to Genoa. Transfer
to the port and embarkation on MV JANAS. Accomodation in 2 bed-cabins.
Day 2 The vessel
stops at Olbia but we continue and sail along the wild eastcoast of
Sardinia to Arbtrax where we will arrive early afternoon.
Day 3 The trip
with the narrow-gauge ‘Trenino Verde’ train from Arbatax to Caligliari is
over 100 miles and takes us across the mountains through a thinly
populated but beautiful landscape. On arrival in the Sardinian capital we
change stations and head north to Alghero.
Day 4 Full day
at leisure in Alghero for discovering the medival town or the
mangnificient beaches nearby.
Day 5
Another day on narrow gauge. First we
travel to Sassari and then from Macomer to the capital of central Sardinia,
Nouro, at the foot of the Supramonte Mountains. In the afternoon we
continue by bus to Olbia.
Day 6 Morning at
leisure. In the afternoon we take a short busride to the ferry and cross
over to Corsica. Bonifacio is another highlight of our trip. The medival
town is perched on cliffs with great views. Overnight in Bonfacio.
Day 7 Corsica is
very mountainous and offers spectacular scenery. The first part of our
island crossing is by road to Ajaccio, where Napoleon I was born in 1769.
From Ajaccio we take the little train for our 80 mile scenic journey to
Bastia.
Day 8 We leave
Corsica by express ferry (6 hours) back to the mainland of Italy. From
Livorno we head back to Zurich along the mediteranean coast and across
the alps.
